Croatia Digital Nomad Visa 2026 — Requirements, Process and What Changed

Croatia was one of the first European countries to introduce a dedicated digital nomad visa, and the scheme has evolved since its 2021 launch. This guide covers the current requirements for 2026 — who qualifies, what documents you need, how the application works and the practical details that the official guidance does not always make clear.

What the digital nomad visa is

Croatia's digital nomad visa is formally a temporary stay permit for foreign nationals who work remotely for employers or clients outside Croatia. It allows stays of up to 12 months, renewable for a further 12 months (with a gap between renewals). It is not a path to permanent residency — it is a stay permit, not an immigration pathway.

The visa was introduced under the Foreigners Act (Zakon o strancima) and allows holders to legally live in Croatia while conducting remote work, without needing a Croatian work permit. The critical requirement: your income must come from employment or business activity with a company or clients registered outside Croatia.

Application process

Applications are submitted at a Croatian embassy or consulate in your home country or country of current residence. You cannot apply from within Croatia (unless you already hold a valid stay permit that allows you to change status).

1. Prepare all documents — employment contracts, bank statements (typically 3 months), insurance policy, accommodation proof, criminal record check, passport copies
2. Translate and apostille — documents not in Croatian or English must be officially translated; some documents require apostille depending on your country
3. Submit at the embassy — bring originals and copies. Book an appointment in advance — wait times at popular embassies can be several weeks
4. Wait for processing — typically 15–30 working days, though this varies significantly by embassy
5. Register on arrival — within 3 days of arriving in Croatia, register your address at the local police station (Policijska uprava)

Tax implications

Croatia has introduced a tax exemption for digital nomad visa holders. Income earned from foreign sources while on the digital nomad visa is exempt from Croatian income tax for the duration of the permit. This is one of Croatia's most competitive features for remote workers — you are not taxed in Croatia on your remote income, while legally living there.

However, your home country's tax rules still apply. Whether you are still considered tax resident in your home country, and what your obligations are there, depends on that country's law and any applicable double taxation treaty with Croatia. This is the most important tax question to resolve with your home country tax adviser before applying.

What you can and cannot do on this visa

You can:

• Live in Croatia for up to 12 months (renewable once, with a gap)
• Work remotely for employers and clients outside Croatia
• Open a Croatian bank account
• Purchase property in Croatia (buying rights are separate from this visa)
• Travel within the Schengen Area as a legal resident of Croatia

You cannot:

• Work for Croatian companies or Croatian clients
• Access the Croatian public health system (you need private insurance)
• Automatically transfer to permanent residency after the visa expires
• Bring dependents on a nomad visa basis (they need separate permits)

Renewal and what comes after

The digital nomad visa can be renewed once, giving a maximum of 24 months on this basis. After that, there is a mandatory gap before re-applying. If you want to stay in Croatia long-term after the nomad visa, the options are: a long-stay visa for other purposes (retirement, passive income), or pursuing a work permit if you are employed by a Croatian entity. Property ownership supports but does not automatically qualify you for long-term residency.
